ESD‐sponsored K‐3 Professional Development for Oregon’s New Literacy Framework!

OREGON K-12 LITERACY FRAMEWORK ~ Adopted by the State Board of Education, December 2009 Developed by the Literacy Leadership State Steering Committee (LLSSC) in partnership with the Oregon Department of Education (ODE)

The purpose of this module is to provide in‐depth information on school leadership, differentiate professional development by role, respond to requests from stakeholders, and address the critical importance of principal leadership.

The training materials are organized into independent sections with an introduction and are aligned to the Leadership chapter of the Oregon K‐12 Literacy Framework:

Strategies for Teaching Based on Autism Research

Who: This workshop is designed for participants interested in implementing the STAR curriculum with students.

What: Participants in the training will learn the 3 methodologies included in the STAR curriculm; Discrete Trial (DT), Pivotal Response Training (PRT) and Functional Routines (FR). Participants will practice and demostrate all 3 methods and will learn data collection for each method. Participants will learn how to assess students using the student learning profile and set up programs for students.

K-3 Professional Development for Oregon's New Literacy Framework

The purpose of this module is to provide a comprehensive review of how effective assessments can improve and guide reading programs. The sections are aligned to the Assessment chapter of the Oregon K-12 Literacy Framework.

The first section, Overview of Assessments, provides a brief description of the four types of assessments: screening, classroom-based, diagnostic, and outcome. The purpose of the assessments is to identify students who are likely to be at risk, monitor progress, assess effectiveness of instruction and/or intervention, diagnose particular strengths and weakness of individual student performance, and evaluate a system's effectiveness of reading instruction.

The second section, An Outcomes-Driven Model, illustrates how the four types of assessment interrelate in practice using examples of three student profiles: a student at high risk, some risk, and low risk. This section concludes with a case studey providing participants an opportunity to analyze a student assessment portfolio containing data results over a year.

Oregon Intervention System (OIS) Training

Two day course on Wednesday, September 22 and Wednesday, September 29, leading to OIS certification or re-certification. Training focuses on individual, classroom, and instructional modification to support students with challenging behavior. Course includes information on Positive Behavior Supports and Physical Intervention. All participants must attend both days. Please use district email address for sign ups, Districts will be billed $50 for each participant. The training will be held in the Board Room at the Banks District Office, 450 S. Main St., Banks, OR 97106.

Target Audience: School and EI/ECSE staff who are involved in the assessment and educational planning of students are Regionally Eligible for Autism Spectrum Disorder services including Special and General Education Teachers and related services staff such as: Speech Language Pathologists, School Psychologists, Behavior Specialists, Autism Specialists, and Occupational Therapists. This would be useful for those who have attended a previous SCERTS training, as well as for those who have not.

FACTER Training

Functional Assessment & Curriculum for Teaching Everyday Routines Presented by: Joel Arick Ph.D. and Brenda Nakada

Who: This workshop is designed for secondary staff (Middle and High School) intending to implement the FACTER curriculum with students.

What: Participants in the training will learn how to assess and take baseline data to determine student functioning, learn to score functional routines, and learn a variety of strategies to implement functional routines within a student’s day. The second day of the training will focus on Discrete Trial Teaching. Participants will learn how to use Discrete Trial to pre-teach specific skills needed for functional routines. Associated skills needed for the routine, such as imitation skills, receptive language, one and two step commands, are also taught using Discrete Trial. Participants will learn how to identify specific skills needed and how to incorporate them into Discrete Trial Teaching.

Comprehensive Accountability Frameworks

She is noted for her dynamic process for transforming education through the development and implementation of system-wide comprehensive accountability frameworks at state and district levels. This training will include:

How to create a Comprehensive Accountability Framework for Success
Establishing District-wide performance indicators
How to monitor those indicators
Information on structured accountability systems and the importance of the data team component in accountability plans

Teaching, Leading, and Learning: Secondary Data Teams

Audience: Superintendents, middle and secondary principals, data team leaders & data team members

Secondary data teams can be challenging. This training will help principals, data team leaders and data team members understand how the role of priority standards, assessments and teaching (cause) data align with the school improvement planning process. Additionally, students need to be prepared for the 21st Century and the Oregon Diploma Requirements. How can all of this be done through the data team process? Principal/teacher teams will:

Learn how to implement the Formative Cycle in Teaching & Learning
Learn how to build positive morale on a data team
Learn how to better implement formative assessment as a strategy for informing instruction
Learn how to become a 21st Century school preparing students for future success
